El pasado domingo 7 de diciembre fue presentada en el Aula Magna de la Casa de la Cultura la estatua a tamaño natural del Gigante Extremeño. Al acto acudieron multitud de vecinos de Puebla de Alcocer y de municipios colindantes.
Agustín Luengo Capilla, más conocido como el “GIGANTE EXTREMEÑO”, nació en Puebla de Alcocer en el año 1849. Fue un personaje destacado en la época debido a que su altura se desarrolló hasta los 2 metros 35 centímetros. Conocida la singularidad del personaje fue recibido en audiencia por el Rey Alfonso XII en el año 1875. El fundador de por aquél entonces Museo Etnológico, el Dr. Pedro González de Velasco, compró su cuerpo por 2,50 pesetas diarias, para que una vez el Gigante falleciera pasara a las dependencias de su recién estrenado Museo.
La réplica del Gigante Extremeño a tamaño real, realizada por un veterano escultor valenciano, Vicente Lorenzo, ha tomado como referencia la única fotografía que se conserva en vida de este personaje extremeño y está confeccionada con el bastón y gorrín que se pueden ver en dicha foto, además se ha incluido también en la figura los botines, regalo de Alfonso XII, que aún se conservan en el museo de la localidad.
La figura es una de las actuaciones recogidas dentro del proyecto de recuperación y puesta en valor de la figura del “GIGANTE EXTREMEÑO”, se espera que a finales de año se proceda al escaneado de los restos de Agustín en el Museo Nacional de Antropología y se fabriquen las réplicas de su esqueleto y vaciado, para su posterior exposición junto con la estatua, en el futuro museo del gigante de la localidad.
Para finalizar el acto, tuvo lugar la presentación del cuento infantil “El Gigante de La Puebla” que narra la vida del Gigante, escrita por Mª Dolores Cerro Camacho con ilustraciones de Víctor M. Nieto Bravo.
La estatua tamaño natural del Gigante puede verse de Lunes a Viernes en horario de 16 a 20:30 horas en las dependencias de la Biblioteca Municipal “Fray Juan de la Puebla”.

Presentation of a life-size statue of the Giant
On Sunday 7th December 2014, a life-size statue of the Giant from Extremadura was presented in the Assembly Hall of the Casa de la Cultura (House of Culture). The event was attended by many residents of Puebla de Alcocer and surrounding districts.
Agustín Luengo Capilla, better known as the «GIGANTE EXTREMEÑO» (EXTREMADURAN GIANT) was born in Puebla de Alcocer in the year 1849. He was a prominent figure at the time as he grew to a height of up to 2 meters 35 centimeters. Because of the uniqueness of this character he was received in audience by King Alfonso XII in 1875. At the time, the founder of the Ethnological Museum, Dr. Pedro Gonzalez de Velasco, bought his body for 2.50 pesetas a day, so that once the Giant died he would be passed to this new Museum.
The life-size replica of the Extremaduran Giant was made by a veteran Valencian sculptor, Vicente Lorenzo, he has taken as a reference, the only photograph that is preserved from the life of this Extremaduran character where he posed with the cane and hat that you can see in the photo. In addition he has also included on the figure the boots, a gift from Alfonso XII, which are still preserved in the museum here in the village.
The figure is one of the actions contained within the project of recovery and emphasizes the value placed on the concept of «EXTREMEÑO GIANT» (Extremaduran Giant), it is hoped that later this year one will go ahead with the scanning of the remains of Augustine at the National Museum of Anthropology and replicas of his skeleton and cast are manufactured to display along with the statue in the future, in the museum of our village.
To finish the event, the presentation of the fairy tale “El Gigante de La Puebla” («The Giant of Puebla») took place which chronicles the life of the Giant, written by Mª Dolores Cerro Camacho with illustrations by Victor M. Nieto Bravo.
The life-size statue of the Giant can be seen from Monday to Friday between 16:00 to 20:30 in the offices of the Public Library «Fray Juan de la Puebla».
